Lesson 4: Weight & Distance with Inequalities

Lesson Objectives:
build and use a simple scale
describe greater than, less than and equal to
describe and use the math symbols appropriately for greater than, less than, and equal to
describe what it means when the scale shows even weight and when uneven weight is added
predict whether two groups of weights will be equal or unequal weights
Materials Needed:
NoRILLA Balance Scales
Student-made balance scales or ready-made scales for each station
Worksheets (check the list in the lesson to choose those best suited for your students)
Cubes in a variety of colors for each group
Dice for each group using Worksheet F Amazon foam dice
Lesson 5: Weight & Distance with Inequalities

Lesson Objectives:
describe greater than and less than and equal to
describe inequality and equality with regards to measurement of weights
describe what it means when the scale shows even weight.
build and use a simple scale
identify the parts of a balance scale
describe what happens to a scale when uneven weights are added to each side
apply the correct math symbols to describe greater than, less than, and equal to
predict whether two groups of weights will be equal or unequal weights
