Pre-Assessment

30 Minutes (Optional)

Objective: Students will complete a pre-assessment.

Materials Needed: Assessment demonstration folder, children’s assessment folders, wipe off markers, record sheet

Introduction: Today students will complete their pre-assessment to show what they already know.


Lesson 1: NoRilla introduction

30-45 Minutes

Lesson Objectives:

  1. Students will observe the procedures of NoRILLA.

  2. Students will complete the Play mode.

  3. Students will take turns with peers.

  4. Students will communicate with peers and adults.

Materials Needed: NoRILLA SmartRamps, pre-built cars and objects, and visual sequence card, and whiteboard with dry erase markers

Lesson 2: SHAPES

30-45 minutes

Lesson Objectives:

  1. Students will observe the procedures of NoRILLA.

  2. Students will complete the Play mode.

  3. Students will take turns with peers.

  4. Students will communicate with peers and adults.

  5. Students will focus on learning about how shape affects speed.

Materials Needed: NoRILLA SmartRamps, NoRILLA objects (different-sized wheels and spheres), visual sequence card, and vocabulary cards

Lesson 3: Friction

30-45 minutes

Lesson Objectives:

  1. Students will observe the procedures of NoRILLA.

  2. Students will complete the Compete mode.

  3. Students will take turns with peers.

  4. Students will communicate with peers and adults.

  5. Students will focus on learning about how friction affects speed.

Materials Needed: NoRILLA SmartRamps, NoRILLA objects (gears and wheels), visual sequence card, and vocabulary cards.

Lesson 4: No Weight vs Weight on the car

 

Lesson Objectives:

  1. Students will observe the procedures of NoRILLA.

  2. Students will complete the Play Mode and the Compete Mode.

  3. Students will take turns with peers.

  4. Students will communicate with peers and adults.

  5. Students will focus on learning about how weight affects speed.

Materials Needed: NoRILLA SmartRamps, NoRILLA pre-built cars, NoRILLA base lego cars, visual sequence card, vocabulary cards, and weighted lego bricks.

Lesson 5: Potential Energy

30-45 minutes

Lesson Objectives:

  1. Students will observe the procedures of NoRILLA.

  2. Students will complete the Play mode and the Compete mode.

  3. Students will take turns with peers.

  4. Students will communicate with peers and adults.

  5. Students will focus on learning about how weight placement affects speed.

  6. Students will focus on learning about how potential energy affects speed.

Materials Needed: NoRILLA SmartRamps, NoRILLA pre-built cars, NoRILLA base magnet cars, NoRILLA base lego cars, visual sequence card, and vocabulary cards.

Lesson 6: Play Mode

30-40 minutes

Lesson Objectives:

  1. Students will observe the procedures of NoRILLA.

  2. Students will complete the Play mode.

  3. Students will take turns with peers.

  4. Students will communicate with peers and adults.

  5. Students will use the scientific method; predict, observe and explain.

Materials Needed: NoRILLA SmartRamps, pre-built cars and objects, visual sequence card, and whiteboard with dry erase markers.

Lesson 7: Student Centered TEST MY CAR

30-40 minutes

Lesson Objectives:

  1. Students will observe the procedures of NoRILLA.

  2. Students will complete the Compete mode.

  3. Students will take turns with peers.

  4. Students will communicate with peers and adults.

  5. Students will learn about how potential energy and weight placement impacts speed.

Materials Needed: NoRILLA SmartRamps, NoRILLA cars, weighted objects (weighted magnets, weighted legos, Lego mini-figures, weighted blocks)


Lesson 8: Build your own ramp

30-40 minutes

Lesson Objectives:

  1. Students will communicate with peers and adults.

  2. Students will use teamwork skills to build a ramp.

Materials Needed:

  3. Foam board

  4. Cardboard

  5. Cereal boxes

  6. Connecting/Construction Blocks

  7. Paper plates

  8. Toilet paper rolls

  9. Tape

  10. Paper towel rolls

  11. Felt pieces/sheets

  12. Pipe cleaners

  13. Variety of art supplies: markers, crayons, glue sticks


Lesson 9: Build your own car

30-40 minutes

Lesson Objectives:

  1. Students will communicate with peers and adults.

  2. Students will use teamwork skills to build a ramp.

  3. Students will use the scientific method; predict, observe and explain.

Materials Needed:

  1. If I Built a Car by Chris Van Dusen

  3. Student-made ramps from Lesson 8

  4. Magna-Tile car building tiles

  5. Lego building set with wheels

Lesson 10: BAll Shapes

40 minutes

Lesson Objectives:

  1. Students will interact with the Compete mode.

  2. Students will take turns with peers.

  3. Students will communicate with peers and adults.

  4. Students will use the scientific method; predict, observe and explain.

  5. Students will try different ways to solve a problem.

  6. Students will test different shaped and textured balls to see which ones will roll down

    the ramp faster.

Materials Needed:  NoRILLA SmartRamps, balls of different shapes, sizes.


Post-Assessment

 

Lesson Objectives: Students will complete a post-assessment.

Materials Needed: Children’s assessment folders (make sure it’s ready for each child to mark), wipe off markers, record sheet
